INSTITUTE

The Vision

KISTI is Alberta’s leader in indigenous skills &
trades training in the context of Alberta Education’s
CTS (career technologies studies) curriculum.

The Mission

KISTI develops the potential of young people
through skills & trades training and strong
mentorship so our youth can integrate their
aptitudes and strengths into their future.

The Challenge

Throughout Alberta, Reserves and Métis
settlements have financial resources for equipment
but lack teachers. Academic E-learning is a positive
influence in many remote areas; however, hands
on skills and trades training is deficient in most
remote areas. The costs of having all aspects of
the Alberta Education CTS curriculum represented

The Solution

●Parents desiring their children to have greater
opportunities in various skills and trades can
connect their children to KISTI.
● Corporations desiring skilled high school
graduates to hire on will have assurance of the
skill level their new hire has from what courses
have been completed at KISTI.
● Develop an indigenous “Trust Council” to assist
KISTI with communications with Reserves and
Métis settlements for continued feedback on
needs of the students.
● Students with limited resources in their remote
areas can spend part of their summers each
year completing skills and trades training with
help from sponsors connected to them. This
allows more focus on their academics training
during the fall, winter and spring months
● All educational assistants (EA’s) are tradesman
or highly skilled professionals in their area of
expertise.
● Small class size to ensure quality mentorship
● One week- 32 hour training allows the
student to focus on developing their skills with
consistent guidance from the EA.

Business Model

● Students will be charged on a per week basis
for the summer camp experience.
● Students will be sponsored by a private
corporation, their Reserve and Métis settlement
or through personal funding for the week long
summer camp course.
● Students will arrive on Sunday and will be
instructed for 7 hours per day from Monday
through Thursday. Students will have a short 4
hour day Friday and leave by late afternoon.
● Students will be fed and cared for while at
KISTI and there will be full time chaperone
service via our EA’s and “Trust Council” Elders.
● Parents are welcome to stay in our
campground and enjoy the area’s tourist
attractions free of charge.
● Courses will run through July and August.
● All class sizes are between 3 to 6 students to
ensure quality instruction with their projects.
● May & June, September & October sessions
are allocated for mature students beyond
attending high school to give them skills
and training to assist in their integrating into
meaningful employment.
● KISTI will facilitate E-learning with teacher
supervision during regular school year.
● KISTI will partner with existing businesses
to ensure self-sustaining revenue long term.
These businesses then will have opportunity to
grow with indigenous partners abroad.

Kisahtahokamik Indigenous Skills and Trades Institute (KISTI) Blessing over Students

"I have instructed you in the way of skillful wisdom; I have led you in upright paths. When you walk, your steps will not be impeded, for your path will be clear and open; and when you run, you will not stumble. Take hold of instruction; actively seek it, grip it firmly and do not let go. Guard it well, for it is your life." - Proverbs 4:11-13
